IT'S DRAFT DAY! MAX WFHL 2016 First Round Picks

FIRST ROUND

It's DRAFT DAY!  Today we kick-off the innaugural 2016 MAX WFHL Draft with the selection of the First Round and Second Round picks.  We will announce the first round picks in this release, and the second round picks later this afternoon.  First, we need to announce the "Fan's First Round Picks," the six players that received the most votes by you, the fans.  These picks were calculated by awarding a player who was ranked first: 6 points, second: 5 points, and so on and then adding up the total points for each player.  Submissions that had the same player repeated multiple times were not included in the calculations (as per the instructions).

The fans have spoken and the 2015 Honda Award Winner, Alyssa Manley from Syracuse University, was the overwhelming top pick!  Manley received nearly double the amount of votes as the next picks.  The top three picks mirrored our early prediction poll for "Who will go #1 in the 2016 WFHL Draft?" a couple of weeks back with Carolina's Wold and Notman finishing in the second and third spots.  It was very quickly clear that Drexel University's Lauren Hibshman was an early fan favorite.  She finished as the #4 pick, and if it weren't for the repeat votes, she would have finished even higher!  National Team players Anna Dessoye from Maryland and Goalkeeper Lauren Blazing filled out the final spots.

Some final notes about the draft.  Since we are doing a "best available" draft and don't have specific team needs, we created a basic style of play and identified some characteristics for each team to help aid with draft selections and making the apples and oranges comparison of players.

North Division
Boston Strikers: Gritty, physical, typically sound defense
Empire State Hustle: Work ethic, hustle, strong defense
Philadelphia Furies: Smart, great ball movement, sound fundamentals

South Division
Central PA Power: Strong and athletic, physical
Chesapeake Chargers: Transition team, speed is key, overloaded attack
Virginia Beach Breakers: Fast, small packages with energy, more individual play but big backs
